TINY HOMES

LLoyd Kahn reckons he isn't the DIY poster guy, but that is bullocks. He's the man who first published Shelter in 1973 and helped fuel a movement.
Kahn has built three houses of his own and published many more books on related topics, his latest:Tiny Homes: Simple Shelter.
Inside, you'll find pages of people who have built stuff themselves and are pretty happy about it. There are cabins in the woods, smaller dwellings in cities, granny flats and multi-storey homes; many of them put together for under $50,000. (There's also a guy who built and fitted out his place for $1000, which is bonkers.)
"It's unrealistic to be 100 per cent self sufficient, but you can probably learn and do more of it than you think," said Kahn when we spoke to him for a story in theSmith five. "We've been going in the direction of larger for the last couple of decades. Now the idea is to go smaller."
Tiny Homes: Simple Shelter can be found at good bookstores and shops, such as Third Drawer Down. It's also available oniPad and through the Shelter Publications website.
